The Tabitha Project shelters are designed to meet the specific needs of community cats and their caretakers which include accessibility, safety and protection from the elements. Constructed from the highest quality Coleman Xtreme coolers and commercial grade piping, our shelters are extra insulated, rugged and durable. They are made to last for many seasons, which means they are more economical and ecologically friendly than standard shelter options which need to be replaced annually. All materials used in the assembly of our shelters are non-toxic and weather-proof. Our shelters are available in three sizes: Medium, Large and Extra Large.
Since launching The Tabitha Project in Spring 2019, we have been able to build and donate 300+ shelters thanks to the generosity of a single private donor. We are now at a point where we need to pivot in order to keep the program moving forward for the Winter 2020 season. While we no longer have the resources to give the shelters away, we are offering them at a subsidized price via our Sponsor-A-Shelter program. The pricing, which is much less than they would cost at retail, is just enough to cover the cost of materials.* We have two volunteers who donate their time to build the shelters.
You can fund one or more shelters — for yourself or someone else caring for community cats, whether it be an individual or an organization. Pick-up is available at one of three New York locations: our build site in Westchester or our satellite locations in the Bronx or South Brooklyn. We are currently unable to accept orders intended for recipients outside of the New York metro region, as shipping costs are prohibitive (i.e. it costs more to ship the shelter than the materials required to build it). See below for dimensions and pricing of the three shelter sizes we offer, then fill out the donation form to pay via Paypal. If you have any questions please contact us.
*The cost of the high-quality coolers we use keeps rising and we do not get any special discounts or bulk pricing. If anyone knows someone at Coleman or one of the retail outlets that carry their Xtreme cooler line (e.g. Amazon, Walmart, Sears) and could help us get a price break, that would greatly help in our efforts to make these shelters as affordable as possible.
* The cost of the 150 quart coolers are prohibitively expensive right now, so we are no longer able to offer the Extra Large shelters at a reasonable price. If you wish to provide us with one of these coolers, we are happy to build a shelter with it. Please reach out to us for more information.
